Blog Challenge #2: One Word

Each Monday we are assigned a voluntary blog challenge on Scrapshare – this is the one Stacy posted for this week.

It was really hard. I had to mull for quite a bit on this one!

Have you ever tried to describe yourself in one word? One word that sort of sums up who you are, what makes you tick, what sets you apart. It's not as easy as you think. As women, we need to spend more time recognizing and celebrating the talents and positive traits we've been adorned with. Whether we're suburban upper-middle class moms or urban, poor, living-the-moment teens - we all have one thing in common: we're beautiful women with amazing talents, unbridled potential... and we're fabulous, baby. Fabulous. Go ahead. Describe yourself with one word. Then ask three other people to describe you, too. Celebrate yourself. I dare you!

So, being the wordy type that I am, I was filled with fear. ONE WORD? I was drowning in an overwhelming number of words: grateful, thoughtful, impatient, generous, altruistic, imperfect, creative, kind, enthusiastic, logical, inclusive, honest, curious, loyal, confident, obstinate, focused, nurturer, disciplined, unfinished, and then it came to me (after a lengthy conversation with Louis – yes, the late one who makes me crazy – the one who knows me better than anyone):

1. compelled by personal need: striving to achieve personal goals because of a strong need or inner compulsion

It’s true. In all aspects of my life: parenting, working, volunteering, friendships, marriage, I have an overwhelming desire to put my personal stamp on things. I believe many things to be true and I live with that as my guiding force. I am true to who I am and what I believe. It doesn’t mean that my life is black and white: I do listen to those with a differing view, depending on the argument; I might even change my outlook. My being driven means simply that I have a compass, something inside; it points me where I need to go with enthusiasm, confidence; with complete conviction that I am right.

Now, for the second part of the challenge, I was to ask three other people to describe me. I sent the note to my younger sister, Beth; my neighbour and friend, Lorraine; and, my university roommate, Wendy. Three very diverse women from different parts of my past, present and future just to mix it up a bit! These are their words:

Beth: Passionate
Lorraine: Empowering
Wendy: Vivacious
Sounds like a complex and interesting woman: still a work-in-progress.
