We chose a Bouvier des Flandres for their great temperament, intelligence and way with children.
It was a brilliant choice. Elvis is a great dog.
Except, we didn't realize that there is no such thing as hypo-allergenic. There is no allergy free dog. Anywhere.
I was perfectly happy to medicate myself. Not so happy about having to medicate Claire. Her allergies triggered her asthma and eczema. Poor thing.
So the hard choice was made to find Elvis a new home. The allergies were the number one reason. #2 was our chaotic schedule that takes us away from home constantly and his having to be left behind - and the ever mounting kennel bills. #3 was our having to chain him up in the back yard as there is no fence and he is a very adventurous mutt and it was heartbreaking that he had no freedom!
There is no functioning rescue organization here in Ontario and the breeder was less than happy about taking him back (particularly with him being neutered and all). The rescue lady in Alberta was tremendous and within a few days found a new home for Elvis - in central Alberta with Rhonda and her family.
Elvis left us on January 20th to his new home in Alberta where Rhonda and her Molly (an 8 year old Bouvier) were waiting for him.
Our kids were sad to see him leave but at the same time relieved that we got him a girlfriend and made every effort to take care of him to insure he would be happy.
