Last night marked the end of the Oakville Hockey MOMS as they have existed since the mid-1950s. We have a mailing list of over 600 women who have participated or do participate in this organization in some kind of volunteer capacity.
Last night was our Annual General Meeting.
In addition to myself, there were six other women in my living room.
1% of our membership.
Now, this is a loose membership. You don't have a card. You don't have a number. You just have a group of women (and sometimes men) who organize team parties, lace up skates, bring drinks or manage the list, collect 50/50 fundraising and, up until this year, run the Championship Week.
This year, "Awards Week" was given to the MOHA as we were unable to raise the $50,000 + to pay for it. We can't get people out to sell mugs and touques, we can't get people out to help with the Tyke Clinic or Skate Sale. How in the world were seven women going to raise $50,000 to pay for an Awards Week?
My intent last night was to step down as president and welcome the "new blood". After months of effort on behalf of a half-dozen women there was no new blood. The result? I will continue in my capacity as caretaker as that is what this has become. Keeping the MOMS on life support - and the money safe - until a group of new MOMS comes up with the brilliant idea to start an organization to support kids in minor hockey or wonder "what ever happened to that group"?
