A few weeks back, we received an invitation to join the Appleby Dragonboat team this season. It is open to all families as well as students at the school. Claire was thrilled and immediately let the coach know that she was interested. Unfortunately, not mentioned in the original e-mail, you have to be 14 years of age to be on the team.
Claire was crushed.
The Dragonboat coach (who is also Claire's swim coach) did some quick checking and offered Claire the job as "drummer". She will practice - and paddle - with the team. She will not paddle during actual competitions.
Claire was delighted!
This was the note that just came through to the two drummers:
Are you excited? You are the Drummers for the 2008 Appleby Dragons. We will work together so that you are the lead face and comfortable taking charge of the team – motivation, rhythm and a calm, cool and collected driving force will be your gift to the team. You truly are the key to the team’s success.
Isn't that the best note that could ever be sent to your kid? The idea that Claire - at 12 - and the other drummer (one of the teachers!) have such responsibility is such a confidence booster for our little girl.

I love coaches that 'Get it". They one that are good for a child's self-esteem but that can also be able to give the "bad news" as needed. The kids respect those coached more.
WAY TO GO CLAIRE!!! I can not wait to see the pictures!!!
