They got the BRONZE! Which is remarkable for a gaggle of girls - only two of whom had ever played any form of organized softball ever before - who only practiced one week before the start of the season! Claire was elected Captain and she took her role to heart. She proved herself to be a patient and kind leader, teaching the girls the basics of throwing, catching and hitting. Oh, and she was VERY ENTHUSIASTIC, as is her nature.
On a personal level it proved to be one hell of a journey these past few weeks and she has shown admirable grace and poise. Certainly nothing that I possessed at the ripe old age of 12 (cripes, I don't know that I have it at 43!)
She was introduced to some pretty harsh realities:
1. Mean girls are REALLY MEAN - and you will be very surprised by who turns out to be the meanest - or most manipulative.
2. Your friends have to be left to choose - or not - by themselves. If you are a good friend you will say your peace and not play tug of war. Trying to influence anyone will only come to bite you in the butt, it's best to stay quiet. If you "win" that means they are a real friend and you are truly blessed. If you "lose" you're better off without them.
3. You will always be surprised, at least by one person, in any personal conflict.
4. A personal conflict is never between two people.
I'm thrilled to know that Claire has more than a couple of truly good friends.
I'm so very proud of her.
