12 of 12 October

I can't believe how quickly we've made it to October! The 10th version of 12of12 for 2009. Time is certainly flying by in this household. That's a good thing, a bad thing, an unavoidable thing.

This was our day:

I start most days pretty early, given that today is Thanksgiving I had a bit of a sleep-in, all the way to 5:30AM! I came down and made sure the island was totally cleaned off and washed down. It was going to be a busy space today!

All of the tableware was set out. I let the kids decide which table we were going to set - dining room or kitchen. They chose the dining room. Thank goodness, I was hoping!

After my coffee, before anyone else in the house was awake, I read everything waiting for me in my google reader and wrote my first blog post of the day.

Around 11AM everyone was up and it was time for our traditional Thanksgiving morning brunch. Today it was quiche (so fun listening to the kids trying to pronounce it!) with bacon, toast and sliced tomatoes. Yum!

Once the brunch dishes are cleared away, the bird is readied for the big meal.

Halfway through the day I realized I hadn't put out my fall door decor! Earlier in the week we finally pulled out the gorgeous white impatiens that had greeted everyone throughout the summer. It was a shame, they were still going strong. They've been replaced with some gorgeous rust coloured mum arrangements.

Claire and her dad decided it was a good idea to make a French Vanilla Cake. A bundt cake, of course. I used to make them once or twice a week. Remember? The days we were always ready for company or playgroup? The kids loved it. Then, as things do, life changed and I didn't bake that much anymore. The excitement today let me know I should bake more!

Ick, while all this was happening, the other side of the kitchen was occupied with Cole making "ribbitz". Ick. Pre-formed rib-like meat-ish pieces formed into something that resembles - barely - a rack of ribs. I'm quite sure it's real meat, and he loves them, but ick. Really.

The turkey is ready! Louis carved. No Norman Rockwell painting here ... it's all done in the kitchen! All messy ... but oh, so good!

My dad will be thrilled. The lights were dimmed and dinner was eaten by candle light. Why would my dad be thrilled? He is the king of the dimmer switch and growing up he would always turn the lights down.

And all those bones and things ended up in the big pot. Turkey stock should be ready in a couple of hours with plenty of turkey soup to be enjoyed at least until Christmas!

A couple of hours after dinner, Claire presented us with a wonderfully decorated and delicious French Vanilla bundt cake. It was supper yummo. It was accompanied by an apple pie, and a strawberry-rhubarb pie left uneaten!

And that is the end of our 12of12 October version.

Happy Thanksgiving!

You did a great job capturing your Thanksgiving Day. =] I forgot all about Canadian Thanksgiving. I could really go for some bacon right now...or turkey...or quiche...or cake...LOL Anything but "ribbitz" I guess. haha
